Another Brayden in the Family

Since Kent didn't post pics of Brayden's blessing I thought I would since I'm a very proud Aunt. :)

What a cutie!

Love you all,

THE KYNASTON WEEKLY NEWS....EMILY REPORTING

Here's a breakdown of the average Kynaston week. Tonight Brian teaches a class for ACCK which is the small colleges around here. He'll be doing this for the next 6 weeks. Tomorrow, we'll start the day with some exercise, clean the house, do 46 loads of laundry and then I have a shower to go to at 1:00 and then we'll pick up the kids from school. Brian referees 2 games tomorrow night. Jessie will have gymnastics. Wednesday, is school, clean the house, do 46 loads of laundry, exercise, pick up kids, church/cubscouts (for Bri and Tay). Thursday is school, exercise, clean the house, do 46 loads of laundry, Make dinner for the missionaries, Bri go on splits with the missionaries. Friday is school, clean the house, do 46 loads of laundry, exercise, pick up kids, Brian refs 2 basketball games, I have a nervous breakdown from being with the kids all day and night this week, then put the kids to bed at 6:45 so I can collect my thoughts by Saturday morning when we'll go to a basketball game and then , clean the house, do 46 loads of laundry, exercise, and take care of the 8 puppies that were born yesterday. They are very cute and it looks like the mother is doing a great job of making sure she takes care of them since I will be too sleepy to do it for her:) If you haven't noticed, we're a little attention deprived out here and would love to hear what's going on in anyone's neck of the woods.

News from Olean, NY

Dear Family,
We have had a lot of snow here, but the problem is that it keeps
melting after it starts getting deep. Olean has a biting cold,
much colder than Utah because of the humidity. When the wind
isn't blowing it's not that bad, but there usually is wind.
Elder Skifton is a good driver, but he does have one close call a
week. When he came to pick me up, he hit a deer...a deer corpse,
that is. He also drove the car into a snowbank a while back, but no
damage was done to the car either time. It was actually kind of
exciting! I am not allowed to drive, as junior companion, which is
probably a good thing, because I think he is a better driver than me.
Michelle Bacher is a wonderful person, and I haven't bore my
testimony to her yet, but that is a good idea, a good way that she
could feel the spirit.
I don't know about the paper plate art, it is probably not original, it
is just there to cover the hole I shot in the wall...I mean....uhhh...
the old furnace...yeah, thats right, the old furnace!
We have Zone Conferences once per transfer (every six weeks).
They are held in different places every time. Sometimes in Erie,
PA and other times in Jamestown, NY, and probably somewhere
else, but I can't remember the name of the town.
I will definitely send more pictures with me in them next time. I just
didn't want to be vain or anything like that, but if you want me to I
will be. All kidding aside, I definitely need to take more pictures
with me in them and get them out to you, because I haven't given
you very many pictures yet.
I have still been slack in my letter writing. I have plenty of
stamps, and I bought a bunch of two cent stamps, so I will send
a bunch of letters out today to different people.
I am going to send a letter to Ben, but tell him that I love him and
know that he will do fine if he just keeps going, tell him not to give
up.
I have been able to play the piano some at church, and even at
some people's houses! I played "How Great Thou Art" at a random
person's house that let us in to warm up. A few days ago, the
spirit was very strong when my Companion and I sang "Joseph
Smith's First Prayer" acapella to the cooks at a soup kitchen. We
also sang that song at one of our investigator's houses, and we felt
the same spirit there. I love music!
I am unfortunately not doing well today, as I woke up with a rumbly
in my tumbly(stomach ache). I then proceeded to throw up about
half an hour later. I think I may have the stomach flu, because a
few of the people we have been visiting had the stomach flu. For
them it did not last for very long, so I hope the same holds true for
me.
I love sharing the message of the restoration with people. It is a
powerful message, and the spirit is always there to bear witness
that it is true.
I love all of you, and wish the best for you. I am also writing an
actual letter to you this week, which should be there next week.
I hope you all have a great week.
Love,
Elder Ostler

News From Kalyn!
Dishing about the family.

I have some news which I have shared with some of you, but not all of you. I am being included in a magazine article on the South Beach Diet. Last week a professional photographer came to my house and I had a two hour photo shoot! It will be in the March 14 issue of Women's World Magazine, probably available in stores as early as March 5-6-7. It's a little magazine sold near checkstands that costs $1.50, and there will only be a small blurb and a small photo of me, but still I am quite excited.

Also, I have been asked to be a contributing editor for Food and Drink for the site Blogher (a compilation site to promote women bloggers). I am quite honored, as the other food and drink editors are some of the top food bloggers in the U.S. This site is not public yet, but after it launches on January 30 I will share the url with you.

One last thing--
Many of you have given me a plate or bowl and I've had fun "dishing" about you on the blog when I use them. (This is the logo I use when I dish about someone.) I'd love to get something from other members of the family. Something from the D.I or an old plate or bowl you don't use any more is fine. Small salad type plates or small bowls work best for food photos. Also, dark colors don't really look good in photos. (If you don't want to bother mailing something, send me a dollar or two and I will buy something at the D.I. and put your name on it.

Toby Keith Tickets, 1/28

For those that live near SLC. .. (Sorry again to those that don't)

I have 4 extra Toby Keith tickets for Saturday. They are $105 for a pair. The two sets are not together; they are almost completely opposite from each other. They are in the top section, almost near the top; on a side view. You can buy 2 or 4.

When I was ordering, it kept telling me the order wasn't going through. I tried twice, then did it on the phone. Low and behold, three sets were ordered! :(

THANKS!

GO STEELERS! Wear your gold or stay home! (just kiddin')

xoxoxo, Lisa

More movie shots

This is all of us on the last day of filming. It was fun but very cold. The movie will be shown on PBS in October and I will try to let you all know what day so you can see it. i can't guarantee that you will see any close shots of any of us, but they did film quite a few with c couple of us. I hope some of them make it to the final cut. I think they will show it between conference sessions in October too. It is the 150 anniversary of the Willie and Martin Handcart rescue in October. Poor Brandon shaved just a week earlier thinking he would not be able to make the filming...I am still glad that he was. (even though he looks about 12 years old) The director personally told Garrett and Jane that they will definitely be a part of the movie because she is pregnant and they taped a lot of special scenes with only them. That is cool.

What an experience!! Glad we did it.

Keep you posted on the dates it will air.

Janet

Happy, Happy, Happy Birthday.

You'll have to look up long enough from looking into somebody's mouth to accept these birthday wishes Kent. Not only that, we're recommending cake and sweets for all three meals today. Followed of course, by a thorough teeth brushing. We hope your day is great. We love you.

My little Alyssa-just wanted to share

This past Tuesday I lost one of my favorite special angels. I worked with Alyssa for seven years and loved her dearly. She was such a sweetheart and her passing leaves a dent in my heart.
She was leaving school on Thursday the 12th,[she is in JR. High now] and while waiting to get on the bus, she took the brakes of her wheelchair off. She rolled down a small hill and flipped over at the curb, hitting her head. Her Mom came and took her home and about 2 hours later they called the ambulance when she lost consciousness. Between Thursday and Saturday she had 3 surgeries to relieve the pressure and bleeding, but they were loosing the battle. [Those were her 38, 39, 40th surgery in her short life] I was able to spend some time in the hospital with her and tell her goodbye---it was really hard. I have been quite close to the family and they still have 2 children that go to my school.
Sometimes this job of mine is very hard as these special children really attach themselves to your heart. Thanks for letting me share.

Alyssa Katy Burnett

Alyssa Katy Burnett 1992 ~ 2006 Our sweet and precious little angel left this earthly existence on January 17, 2006 due to an accident. She was born on a beautiful winter day on February 10, 1992 to the proud parents of Mark and Jamie Berger Burnett. Alyssa was born with Spina Bifida and endured many obstacles in her life. She was valiant and courageous as she faced her numerous challenges. She never complained, but continued to teach us what our Heavenly Father wanted us to learn, which is patience and the pure love of our Savior Jesus Christ. Alyssa exhibited those traits until the very end. Alyssa loved many things which include watching TV, listening to music, reading books, cuddling, holding your hand, hugs, and watching others do silly things to make her laugh. Anytime Alyssa could be with her family and friends brought her such joy and happiness. She was a student at Farmington Junior High School. Alyssa is survived by her parents, Mark and Jamie Burnett, older sister Angela, younger brother Taylor, younger sister Emma, grandparents Kent and Birgit Burnett and Hazel Berger, many numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins whom she loves so dearly. Preceded in death by a grandpa Keith Berger and cousin Vanessa Berger. A special thanks from the family to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Primary Children's for nearly 14 years of dedication and service to Alyssa. Your compassionate care for her will always be appreciated. Special thanks goes to Paula Peterson. A viewing will be held on Friday, January 20 from 6-8 p.m. at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 North Main Bountiful. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 21 at 1:00 pm at the Centerville Canyon View Stake Center, 2150 North Main. Interment Centerville City Cemetery. Contributions can be made to Primary Children's Medical Center in Alyssa's name. Online guest book at www.russonmortuary.com. We love you Lys, now go run, play, jump, and dance until we can be together again. Until then, Precious, you will be forever in our hearts. Published in the Deseret News on 1/19/2006.

Love,
Pam

well, we have officially started filming the pioneer movie

I thought you would all get a kick out of seeing me
looking so grim! That is what the movie crew
called me at least. They loved my look. and no, it is not makeup making my nose red! just a blessing I have when my nose gets cold. It was VERY COLD at Rock Creek (on the top of south pass in the Wind River Mountains) today and we were pulling the handcarts up a steep hill with the wind howling and snow about 2 feet deep. I fell down many times and we all were about frozen. This was taken near the end of the day just before we filmed the shots around the campfires. They took many closeup shots of Jon and I. I hope they are not all edited out. Time will tell. We will be filming all day tomorrow and Friday at Martin's cove. Hopefully, Brandon and Garrett will be able to come to those filming sessions too. I hope I eventually get the feeling back in my toes! hehe We are very tired tonight, but excited for the opportunity to do this film. It should be aired on pbs in October and I will let you all know so you can watch.

Love you all,

your tired and "grim looking sis and aunt and mom and ???

Please Vote for Me

Voting is now open at The Best of Blogs, where Kalyn's Kitchen is one of ten finalists for Best Cooking/Recipe blog. I sent you an e-mail with the link, but in case I missed anyone, here it is again:

http://www.thebestofblogs.com/vote-here/

I'm coming back to add a little more info, since I've heard from some people who found it hard to navigate the voting site. If you are using Internet Explorer you may have to click on a text link (words only) that says *Vote Here* to get the voting page. Then scroll down about halfway to find the cooking blogs. To vote for me, click in the little circle by the name "Kalyn's Kitchen" then click vote. (If you end up at my blog, you HAVE NOT voted. You should see the results in a bar graph after you vote.) You can vote until January 30. Don't vote more than once on the same computer. Also places that are networked usually only can only have one vote per place unless each computer has a different IP address, which they hardly ever do.

Thanks to everyone who has offered to help me by forwarding this to other friends and relatives. Popular vote counts for 40% of the score, so every vote will help.

By the way, my blog had 960 visitors yesterday!! Quite exciting.

Since we've all enjoyed Kalyn's cooking...

I just thought I'd put my two cents in about voting for Kalyn's Kitchen as "Best Cooking/Recipe Blog. It would be just too cool if she won. In fact, I think a short email to everyone in your email address book asking them to vote is also a great idea. I did it and people were happy to vote. Here's the link: VOTE.

We've been practicing....

Kynaston Family Update....

Here's the Kynaston Summary:

Taylor is now 8 years old and has just begun his 3rd basketball season. We are currently struggling with the coach to change practice times because it it on Wednesday nights and our whole town has"church" that night. We of course go to cub scouts. He is happily reading a book (1 of 3) about what happened after the first 6 episodes of Star Wars...can't quite get enough of that. Tommorow he will be going bowling after school for a birthday party.

Jessie is now 5 1/2 years old and an very energetic kindergartener. She is enjoying gymnastics and doesn't at all think it's "nasty". She gets to take her parachute that she got for Christmas to school tomorrow. Believe me, she's been waiting for this day!!! She had good reports on this 9 weeks report card and loves school.

Lexi is now 3 years old. She had fun yesterday when she went to the YMCA with me in the morning, then to the library, and to top it off we went to Dad's office and to Taco Bell. After such a long outing she needed some theraputic TV watching. I think we watched Dora for 1 1/2 hours straight! She helped me wash windows today and enjoyed a little jumprope with her big sister after school.

Kelcie our baby is almost 10 months old. She jabbers all the time. Right now she is mimicking BRian and trying to say "dog" "da dad ada da d dda da" pretty darn close. She's a jumping bean and loves our puppy crazy maisy! Today she got to hang out at the "Y" with big sister. I'm sure she came in contact with many different bacterias and viruses today. Hopefully she will fend them off!!

Tonight, we are lucky enough to have Cole and Ben come visit. I guess the unlucky one is Ben since he has an appoinintment to get a couple of his wisdom teeth out tommorow. I think I'll try to talk Cole into Water Polo just before her dental appointment.

Talk to everyone later!!!
P.S. I want to see Heath's hair!

Like Father like Son

I walked in the bathroom and caught Cooper catching up on his fish reading! What a nut!

Andrew's Letter

Dear Family,

I have been improving myself everyday, and am able to open my mouth
a little more and share the gospel with people. On Tuesday of this week,
Elder Skifton and I tracted from 10 AM to 4 PM straight, with no break
for lunch. We were going to tract all day but we had a dinner appointment.
On P-Days, we do different things every week. We will usually take a nap.
Also, we usually play some games, or just read the scriptures. I haven't
played any sports yet, but we could. My companion and I both aren't into
sports, so that might be the reason why we haven't. During laundry we
go shopping, then stop back and put the laundry in the dryer, and then
we go home and put away the groceries. We spend an hour on e-mail
at the library every week, but this week I am writing from a part-member
family's house. The Bacher family, which consists of Aaron, Michelle,
and their daughter Ashlee. Aaron also has two other daughters from
his first marriage that he has over every other weekend, Amanda and
Amber. They are very very nice to us, and feed us a lot. They are from
Texas, and have good old southern hospitality. Michelle is not a member,
but she is one of the nicest people I have met.
It is good to hear that Kirk is home. I was able to write him a few letters
and he wrote me a few back.
We still have about the same progressing investigators that we had before,
and have been trying to find new people, but haven't had much luck yet. We
will find them, we just need to keep on searching.
Since I'm at the Bacher's house, I can send pictures this week! I am going
to send a bunch of older and newer ones (24, to be exact). They are 30%
of their original size, and because there are so many I zipped them up, so
you will have to unzip them to see them.
I hope everyone gets well soon. I have been fortunate enough not to get sick
yet, and I still hope that I won't get sick on my mission. It will probably
happen eventually though.
I hope you all have a good week, and thank you for praying for me. It has
helped me every day, knowing that you pray for me.
I also want all of you to know that I know that the Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter-day Saints is the only true church on the face of the earth! I know
that Joseph Smith was a true prophet and did restore this gospel, and that
our current prophet, Gordon B. Hinckley is the Lord's representative on the
earth today. I love this gospel, and love to see how it changes people's lives.
I hope everyone has a great week, and if you do have trials, remember that
we must experience the bad to appreciate the good.

Love,
Elder Andrew J Ostler

PS - Enjoy the pictures!

This is what happens when we take the camera out to take pictures of Jaxon.... :o)

Another year gone by. Another year older.

I really enjoyed this so thought I would pass it along. Happy 2006.
George Carlin's Views on Aging

Do you realize that the only time in our lives when we like to get old is
when we're kids? If you're less than 10 years old, you're so excited about
aging that you think in fractions.

"How old are you?" "I'm four and a half!" You're never thirty-six and a
half. You're four and a half, going on five! That's the key.

You get into your teens, now they can't hold you back. You jump to the
next number, or even a few ahead.

"How old are you?" "I'm gonna be 16!" You could be 13, but hey, you're
gonna be 16! And then the greatest day of your life . . you become 21.
Even the words sound like a ceremony . . YOU BECOME 21. YESSSS!!!

But then you turn 30. Oooohh, what happened there? Makes you sound like
bad milk! He TURNED; we had to throw him out. There's no fun now, you're
Just a sour-dumpling. What's wrong? What's changed?

You BECOME 21, you TURN 30, then you're PUSHING 40. Whoa! Put on the
brakes, it's all slipping away. Before you know it, you REACH 50
and your dreams are gone.

But wait!!! You MAKE it to 60. You didn't think you would!

So you BECOME 21, TURN 30, PUSH 40, REACH 50 and MAKE it to 60.

You've built up so much speed that you HIT 70! After that it's a
day-by-day thing; you HIT Wednesday!

You get into your 80s and every day is a complete cycle; you HIT lunch;
you TURN 4:30; you REACH bedtime. And it doesn't end there. Into the 90s,
you start going backwards; "I Was JUST 92."

Then a strange thing happens. If you make it over 100, you become a little
kid again. "I'm 100 and a half!"
May you all make it to a healthy 100 and a half!!

HOW TO STAY YOUNG
1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height.
Let the doctors worry about them. That is why you pay "them "

2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.

3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening,
whatever. Never let the brain idle. "An idle mind is the devil's
workshop."

4. Enjoy the simple things.

5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath.

6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person, who is
with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive.

7. Surround yourself with what you love, whether it's family,
pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your
refuge.

8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is
unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.

9 Don't take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, even to the next
county; to a foreign country but NOT to where the guilt is.

10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER:
Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments
that take our breath away.

ANDREW'S LETTER

Dear Family,

The time that we talked was not too long. I was glad to be able to
hear everyones voices again. It has been a while.
The Branch President does not have any children yet, and has
only been a member for about five years. He and his wife are
wonderful people, and are a great help to this area.
We are allowed to have dinner appointments more than once a
month, but each member can only have us over once every month.
Thank you for Kyle's address, I need to start writing more letters. I
am sending you a letter today, so it will probably take until after
the new year to get there.
We have some really wonderful investigators right now. The first
is a mother and her stepson, Traci and Freddie. When the Zone
Leaders came down and went on splits with us, we went tracting
and found Traci and Freddie. I have only met them once at the
door, but my companion assures me that they are great. They live
in Portville, NY, which is about eight miles from Olean. We gave
them a Mr. Kruger's Christmas DVD, and they watched everything
on it by that same evening! As I said, I haven't had a chance to
personally teach them yet, but I will be able when we follow-up
next. Freddie is halfway through 1 Nephi as of yesterday.
Our other investigator that we are focusing on right now is Maria.
She is engaged to a inactive (or maybe even excommunicated)
member of the church. His name is Lonnie. He wants to come
back to church very badly. He says that he thinks about coming
back every day. They have committed to come to church this
week, and they both want to go. Maria seems to be open to the
gospel, and Lonnie has a strong testimony that he can share with
her. We were able to give both of them Priesthood blessings last
night because they are both sick, and that was a wonderful
experience.
We have high hopes for all three of these investigators, and have
yet to follow-up with some that we have taught.
I hope everyone has a Happy New Year, and I hope that you all
had a Merry Christmas.

Love,
Elder Andrew J Ostler

PS - Dad, I haven't been called back about the geode place yet,
but I have received some information. The guy's name is: Loy
Crapo ("a" as in crate), and it is in Delta. I will get his phone
number for you once I get it from Brother Owens. I just thought
I should tell you what I know so far.

Andrea's Graduation

I just wanted to clarify something about Andrea's graduation. She finished all of her class-work a few weeks ago but she won't get to walk in the graduation ceremony until April. That is when both Andrea and I will be walking at the same time. That is why we haven't sent out announcements or made a big deal about it...the announcements will be sent out in April. Sorry for the confusion...it wasn't a secret.

We love you all and wish you all the best in 2006!

Eddie

Happy 2006!

Happy New Birthday.

I think that's the appropriate title for Jon Ostler's birthday. Nothing like making a resolution on January 1st of every year to EAT MORE CAKE. Have a wonderful day and 2006 Jon. We love you.
